How to calculate print size from pixels

Print size is the pixel count divided by the output resolution. The same image prints smaller at a higher DPI because the pixels are packed more tightly.

Print width in inches = pixel width / DPI

Print width in cm = pixel width / DPI × 2.54

Height uses the same formula with pixel height. A 3000 × 2000 px image at 300 DPI is 10 × 6.67 in, or 25.4 × 16.93 cm.

What DPI should I use for printing?

The right DPI depends on viewing distance, paper, and how critical the detail is. 300 DPI is a common target for photo-quality prints, but it is not a hard rule.

  1. 300 DPI is a solid choice for close-viewed photos and high-quality print products.
  2. 240 DPI usually still looks very good, especially for slightly larger prints.
  3. 150 DPI works for larger prints that will be seen from farther away.
  4. Lower values can be enough when the print is viewed from a distance, such as posters or banners.

Pixels vs DPI

Pixels are the actual image data: how much detail the file contains. DPI (and the closely related PPI) describe how densely those pixels are laid down on paper. Increasing DPI does not add detail; it only changes how large the existing pixels print.

What size can I print a 3000 × 2000 pixel image?

At 300 DPI, a 3000 × 2000 px image prints at 10 × 6.67 inches (25.4 × 16.93 cm). At 150 DPI the same file can be printed at 20 × 13.33 inches (50.8 × 33.87 cm). Use the calculator above to compare other DPI values.

Is 300 DPI always necessary for printing?

No. 300 DPI is a common target for photos viewed up close, but many prints look very good at 240 DPI. Larger prints meant to be seen from farther away can use 150 DPI or less. Viewing distance and the kind of print matter more than a single number.

How many pixels do I need for an A4 print?

A4 paper is 21.0 × 29.7 cm (8.27 × 11.69 in). At 300 DPI that is about 2480 × 3508 pixels. At 240 DPI you need about 1984 × 2806 pixels. Portrait or landscape orientation simply swaps the two values.

What is the difference between DPI and PPI?

DPI (dots per inch) describes printer output. PPI (pixels per inch) describes how image pixels map to a physical size. For a print-size calculator they are used the same way: pixels divided by resolution gives inches. In everyday print talk, people often say DPI for both.

Can I print a low-resolution image larger?

Yes. Lowering the DPI stretches the same pixels over a larger area. The print can still look acceptable if people stand farther back. The calculator will not call an image unprintable; it simply shows the size and a plain-language quality note for the chosen DPI.
